Sport Pilot License (SPL)

The Sport Pilot License (SPL) offers individuals the opportunity to obtain a license with reduced costs and simplified requirements, while adhering to specific privileges and limitations as outlined in (61 - Subpart J) of the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) regulations.

This license enables its holder to operate light sport aircraft, including Fixed-Wing and Gyrocopter, which are limited to a maximum seating capacity of two individuals.

Privileges

  • Operate as a pilot in command of a sport pilot-eligible aircraft.
  • Carry a single passenger for non-commercial flights.
  • Fly during the daytime using visual flight rules (VFR), and the visibility range should be more than 5 Km.
  • Fly up to 10,000 feet above mean sea level (MSL) or 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL), whichever is higher.
  • Fly in Class E and G airspace (and B, C, and D airspace with appropriate training).

Limitations

  • Carry more than one passenger.
  • Fly during the night from sunset to sunrise.
  • Fly at the lower visibility range (less than 5 Km).
  • Fly at altitudes of more than 10,000 feet above sea level (MSL) or 2,000 feet above ground level (AGL)
  • Commercial use
  • Fly in Class A airspace (and Class B, C, and D airspaces without appropriate training).

Obtaining the License

Upon successful completion of the theoretical test and fulfilling the practical requirements for the license, the instructor will endorse the practical test form issued by the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA).

This endorsement confirms the readiness of the candidate for the practical examination. Subsequently, the test date will be determined by GACA-accredited examiners.

Requirements

  • Be a member of the Saudi Aviation Club (REGISTER).
  • Minimum 17 years old.
  • Hold at least a Class 3 medical certificate.
  • Proficiency in English language.
  • Ground Training from an authorized instructor and pass the required knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas listed in GACAR § 61.235.
  • Meet the aeronautical experience requirements of GACAR § 61.239 that apply to the aircraft endorsement sought before applying for the practical test.
  • Pass a practical test on the areas of operation listed in GACAR § 61.237 that apply to the aircraft endorsement sought.
  • Flight time of 20 hours, including at least 15 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor in a single‑engine airplane and at least 5 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in GACAR § 61.237 which must include at least 2 hours of Cross‑country flight training as stated in GACAR § 61.239.

Note

GACAR PART 61 prescribes the requirements for issuing pilot certificates and ratings; the conditions under which those certificates and ratings are necessary; and the privileges and limitations of those certificates and ratings.

Sport pilot training minimum requirements as per GACAR 61 are the basis of the above calculations, it's important to note that most students will require additional training to reach the required proficiency level for Sport pilot. Each individual is different therefore, students should budget for 20-30% additional training

Payment Methods & Guidelines

Flight training expenses REQUESTED to be paid using the approved payment methods established by the Saudi Aviation Club's finance department. These methods include point of sales machines or wire transfers directly to the Saudi Aviation Club's ANB Bank account with the following details: SA7530400108012103990011

SAC only accept payments as indicated above.

It is essential to understand that the flight instructor's primary responsibility is your training. If you need to make payments for flight expenses, please coordinate with the Saudi Aviation Club's financial department or the designated person in charge at the airport. They will provide necessary guidance and support to ensure the proper completion of payment transactions.

Please note that the prices for all phases of the flight training program have been meticulously determined and officially displayed on the Saudi Aviation Club's official website. It is crucial to REPORT any rates or prices that DO NOT align with the information displayed on the Saudi Aviation Club's website.

It is important to be aware that the Saudi Aviation Club DOES NOT accept any responsibility for additional charges or amounts to be transferred to any account other than the Saudi Aviation Club's ANB Bank account. Engaging in such transactions SHOULD BE AVOIDED to ensure the appropriate handling of your payments and to prevent any potential overcharging.

If you encounter any issues or difficulties with your ongoing instructor, please kindly communicate with us, and we will be more than happy to arrange for another instructor to assist you.

Please note that flight schedules may be subject to rescheduling after payment in the following situations:

  • The aircraft is deemed unfit for flight at the scheduled time.
  • Weather conditions do not permit safe flying.
  • Security restrictions are in place.

Note:

If the payment transaction has already been completed, the flight will be rescheduled based on availability.
